About the Author

Sachi Routray (1916-2004). Sachidananda, popularly known as Sachi Routray, has been hailed as the inaugurator of a new age in Odia poetry. His fame as a poet of new trends and sensibility rests on the publication of Pandulipi (1947) and Kabita 1962 (1962), which helped him break away from the cramping romantic tradition of Odia poetry, initiated by the Sabuja poets. He became a household name in Odisha after the publication of Pallishree and Baji Rout. He had a career that spanned over more than fifty years as a poet, essayist, literary critic, story writer and novelist. His collections include Patheya, Bhanumatira Desh (poetry), Chitragrib (novel), Mashanira Phul (short story). He received the Jnanapith, India’s highest literary award, apart from the Soviet Land Nehru award and Sahitya Akademi award. Government of India conferred on him Padmashri, country’s fourth highest civilian award for his overall contribution to art and literature.

Bhagaban Jayasingh (b.1952), an eminent bilingual writer, who writes both in Odia and English, has published several collections of poetry and prose. Black Eagle Books of America has brought out The Dapples of Darkness, an anthology of his poetry and Foot Prints of Fire, a translation of seventy four contemporary Odia poets. Dr. Jayasingh has also published Door to Despair, a critical work on modernism in Odia poetry. He edited an anthology titled 1950 Parabarti Odia Poetry for Sahitya Akademi. He also guest-edits ‘Konark’, Odisha sahitya Akademi’s biannual journal in English. Dr. Jayasingh has received a flurry of literary awards, including prestigious Vishub Jhankar and Odisha Sahitya Akademi awards for poetry.
